The Federal Republic of Nigeria is made up of thirty six (36) States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Each state has a democratically elected governor while the FCT has a minister appointed by the President of Nigeria.

Most of the current serving state governors in Nigeria were elected and sworn-in to office in 2015 while election in some states occurs in a different year.

Eligibility to become a Governor in Nigeria

The constitution of Nigeria stipulates that “A person shall be eligible for the office of State Governor in Nigeria if he or she is a citizen of Nigeria by birth, at least 35 years of age, is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party.

The maximum duration of governance for Nigerian state governors is two terms of four-year.
